Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is staring a huge opportunity in the face. And it's one that he can't waste — or he'll regret it forever.
The Bills are 6-6 through 12 games. They're currently just outside of the playoffs, but they're very much "in the hunt".
Buffalo is a better team than their record indicates, which is evidenced by their near-win against the Philadelphia Eagles last weekend (a game that could've been won by the Bills if Allen and Gabe Davis are on the same page in overtime).
With the Eagles looking like the best team in the NFL, that near-win is proof that Buffalo can compete with anyone in the league.
Allen and the Bills might not be in an ideal position when it comes to playoff seeding, but everything they want to accomplish is still in front of them. And they have a chance to change the narrative about this season while navigating a difficult stretch of the schedule that might not be as difficult as it appears.
The Bills finish the season with games against the Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots, and the Miami Dolphins.
Buffalo should beat a struggling Chargers team. And they absolutely should beat a Patriots team that is the worst New England team we've seen during the Bill Belichick era.
The other three games are toss-up games. This is one of the weaker Chiefs teams that we've seen during Patrick Mahomes' prime. They're beatable — even at home. And the Cowboys' record has been inflated by beating up on some not-very-good teams. Dallas' best win came against the Seattle Seahawks this week on Thursday Night Football. The game against Miami, as always, is a toss-up game that could go either way.
The schedule might looking daunting, but the Bills could easily go 4-1 in that stretch — that's doable for Allen and his teammates in Buffalo. And that would almost certainly get the Bills into the playoffs. From there, anything could happen.
With the Chiefs looking "gettable" and no one from the AFC South looking like a threat, plus no Joe Burrow in the playoffs, this is as easy of a path to the Super Bowl that Allen will likely have in his career.
It's not necessarily fair to put it all on Allen's shoulders — Buffalo's defense is the reason for the loss to the Eagles, Allen couldn't have done much more than he did — but this is his team. Fair or not, it's the quarterback who gets the praise and the blame. And at 27 years old, Allen is in the prime of his career. This is his Super Bowl window. That's not to say that it's closing anytime soon, but you can never assume that a window will stay open forever.
The AFC won't always be as "weak" as it is this season. Allen and Buffalo have to take advantage of this opportunity. The season — and a chance to win a championship — essentially starts now as the calendar flips to December.
