The Buffalo Bills made an important roster decision on Friday as they released quarterback Matt Barkley from Injured Reserve with an injury settlement, per ESPN's Field Yates.

Barkley, who was locked in a battle with Kyle Allen to back up Josh Allen in 2023, suffered an elbow injury in the preseason that sent him to IR on Tuesday as the Bills raced to get their 53-man roster ready ahead of the deadline.

The news means that Barkley is now free to sign with any other team ahead of the NFL regular season. Otherwise, his season would've ended on the Bills' IR. Barkley could theoretically come back to the Bills later in the year but it'd take at least three weeks for him to be able to per NFL rules.

As for the Bills, they'll start the season with only Josh and Kyle Allen on the 53-man roster. If all goes according to plan, we'll only get to see the former once the season kicks off.

Buffalo also signed QB Shane Buechele to the practice squad on Thursday. Buechele spent the last two years with the Kansas City Chiefs after a collegiate career with stops at Texas and SMU.

The Bills will play the New York Jets on Monday Night Football in Week 1 at MetLife Stadium as they'll try to spoil Aaron Rodgers' regular season debut with their AFC East rival.
