Despite missing four games due to injury this season, Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer is still poised to be one of the NFL’s most attractive free agents when the offseason rolls around.
Poyer, who is playing in his 10th season in the NFL, has made quite an impact when he’s been on the field this year. The All-Pro safety has racked up four interceptions on the season, which is a team high.
It’s no surprise that Poyer is already garnering plenty of attention as his contract is set to expire at season’s end. In fact, Pro Football Focus mentioned him as one of the top 25 free agents to hit the market following the 2022 campaign.
Poyer checked in at No. 22 in PFF’s 2023 NFL Free Agent Rankings: Top 25 players set to enter free agency.
Here is what author Brad Spielberger had to say about the Bills’ ballhawk.
“Poyer was seeking an extension before the 2022 season and his performance thus far has gone a long way in proving why he was worthy of a new deal, but various injuries have also illustrated perhaps why Buffalo was wary of committing to the 31-year-old beyond 2022. That said, Poyer logged 950-plus snaps in every season from 2017-21, so his toughness and willingness to play through ailments cannot be questioned.”
“Poyer is in the midst of his fourth consecutive season earning coverage grades and overall grades above 70.0, with a lot of turnover in the Bills' secondary throughout the season, most notably with his safety partner Micah Hyde lost for the year. Poyer’s 91.5 coverage grade since 2020 is the best among safeties. He still has good football left to be played.”
If Poyer opts to test the waters in free agency, Spotrac has projected his market value to be just north of $11 million per year. However, with what he’s been able to accomplish in Buffalo, it would be a surprise to see general manager Brandon Beane let Poyer walk.
For a team whose Super Bowl window is wide open, inking Poyer to a deal following the conclusion of the season could be the difference in the Bills bringing the Lombardi Trophy to Buffalo.
Poyer is one of many difficult decisions Beane will have to make, but for now his focus is on being the last team standing in February. What will happen when free agency begins in March is an afterthought at the current moment.
