The Buffalo Bills All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been in the national spotlight recently. It's around this time of year that cryptic tweets are often over-sensationalized and fans start believing star players may want to part ways with the organization. In the case of Stefon Diggs, that's exactly what happened.
Most of these rumors began with the devastating playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals to end the season. Diggs, rightfully so, was angry at the outcome and effort displayed by the team. Specifically, Diggs was frustrated on the sideline with Josh Allen during the contest, leaving social media to believe things weren't going so well at One Bills Drive.
Before Diggs arrived in Buffalo, there were reports that the talented wide reciever was a diva, that he would never fit in with Buffalo, and something would come up that would show the world his true colors. That couldn't be further from the truth.
Diggs is an ultimate competitor and the WR1 Buffalo has been waiting years for. Stefon Diggs is also a human, with emotions, along with hundreds of cameras pointing at him seemingly at all times. The outburst on the sideline and his attempt to abruptly leave the stadium all stem from his love of the game. That, and the Bills' inability to execute during the biggest game of the season.
Another year, another devastating loss before the ultimate goal of a Super Bowl. All of that to say, Diggs is an elite WR1 that is not going to be leaving Buffalo anytime soon. That, and none of his tweets are an indicator of him leaving the team unless he flat-out says "I want to leave Buffalo and I despise Josh Allen."
Diggs, being the excellent teammate he is, was having some fun on social media and provided the Bills Mafia an answer to one of the biggest talking points surrounding the offseason: WR2.
Bills Mafia is divided in the belief that Gabe Davis is the WR2 of the future. Some arguments are that most of his yards or touchdowns only came in a handful of games, others point to certain drop metrics or catch percentages, while others may put his numbers against other WR 1A or 1Bs across the league and claim that he isn't executing where he should. Diggs, along with Cole Beasley, have come to share their thoughts about the Bills' budding reciever. Albeit brief, Diggs and Beasley were direct with their messages about Davis and where his career is at.
Stefon Diggs only left one word when talking about Gabe Davis, answering a tweet from Cover One intern Ajay Cybulski on what the floor/ceiling is for the reciever. Specifically, where Gabe Davis is currently: WR1.
This immediately caused fans to ask Diggs what he was then, but Diggs apparently was out of the fun at that point and didn't respond further.
While a meaningless tweet, it is an indicator of how the locker room feels about Davis and his abilities on the football field. While many fans are clamoring for Beane to trade/draft for a top-end wide reciever, we may have one currently sitting on the roster waiting to explode next year. That isn't to say that drafting a wide reciever would be a mistake, but rather that some fans' perception of Davis as a sub-par WR may be incorrect.
This sentiment is further discussed in Cole Beasley's defense of Davis.
Beasley pointed out that a low percentage route tree Davis had deployed could be a reason why fans have a less-than-stellar view of the reciever. Whether that's play-calling issues from Ken Dorsey or growing pains with Davis, it is unclear.
Nevertheless, players seem to agree that Gabe Davis is better than just a WR2 on this roster. Gabe Davis would be able to quiet a lot of doubters next season if he were to succeed with this offense. Let's see if his ceiling is as high as Diggs thinks it to be.
Bills Mafia, get your popcorn ready.
