The Buffalo Bills have had a very inconsistent, and frustrating, season, but the pass rush certainly hasn't disappointed.
The unit is currently tied for the fourth-most sacks (42) in the league and it pressures opposing quarterbacks at a 25% clip, which is good for sixth-best. The most impressive part about those numbers is Sean McDermott blitzes at a 23.5% rate, which is 20th out of 32 teams.
It's a very, very good thing if you can generate top-6 numbers in both sacks and pressure rate without blitzing a lot. The Bills are doing just that in 2023.
A big reason why the pass rush is so successful is because of the variety of contributors on the roster. The Bills defense has 14 players with at least a half-sack on the season, with veteran pass-rusher, Leonard Floyd leading the way at 9.5.
Floyd added to that total on Sunday against the Cowboys. He recorded a sack in the first quarter of the game to push his total to 10.5 on the year. As a result, he crossed an incentive threshold that earned him an extra $1 million in 2023. The 10.5 sacks also match the career-high he set with the Los Angeles Rams back in 2020.
Floyd signed a one-year, $7 million deal back in June as insurance for Von Miller, who was still recovering from his torn ACL, at the time. It's safe to say Floyd has been worth every penny of his deal.
It's also been impressive because of the narrative that has followed him ever since he joined the Rams. He racked up 29.5 sacks in three seasons after recording just 18.5 in four seasons with the Chicago Bears. That led many to think that Floyd's success was largely due to the presence of Aaron Donald, which is logical, but also disrespectful, to an extent.
Well, Floyd has destroyed that narrative in his first season away from Donald. It's clear the veteran pass rusher has found his stride and it'll be interesting to see what happens with him once free agency rolls around in March.
