The Buffalo Bills got some excellent news on Friday when the contract details surrounding tight end Dawson Knox emerged. Knox and the Bills agreed to terms on a new three-year deal that drastically reduces his 2026 cap hit. Originally, Knox was owed around $17 million before the new deal.
There was a chance that Knox might not even be with the organization. He spoke with former center Mitch Morse on the “Monday Mornings with Mitch” podcast, where he discussed that there was a chance he might not be with the team if they couldn’t figure out the cap situation.
Luckily, it never came to that.
It’s been reported now that the official numbers have come out, that the Bills have saved around $8.5 million by getting a new contract out to Knox. It’s a three-year, $20 million deal with $6.6 million AAV and $13.46 million guaranteed. It not only frees up some cap space but keeps a valuable player on a realistic contract for the next several seasons.
A huge win for Brandon Beane and the organization without signing a single player to do it.
Buffalo has been busy freeing up some cap space ahead of the 2026 season
It wasn’t the first cap-saving move Buffalo pulled off, as just days before, the team restructured the contract of quarterback Josh Allen to free up some more cap space. The move freed up $12 milli on in 2026 salary cap space, and the extra cash is allowing Buffalo to take a few swings in free agency.
The Bills were dead last at one point in terms of available cap space, according to Over The Cap. They were bleeding money and needed a few restructures to get them back in the black. Now, the website has Buffalo cap compliant with a little over $100k to play with.
Expect more cap-saving moves to be made over the coming days and weeks.
With Knox locked in on a much more team-friendly deal, Buffalo keeps one of Allen’s most trusted weapons while creating the flexibility it desperately needed.
It’s the kind of quiet but critical move that allows Beane to keep the core intact while still leaving the door open for the next big addition, whenever that may be.
