Former NFL Coach of the Year erupts over Sean McDermott firing and says the quiet part out loud
Bruce Arians wasn’t going to be silenced on his thoughts about the Sean McDermott firing.
The news of the town is the Buffalo Bills’ decision to part ways with head coach Sean McDermott. The veteran head coach built a new culture in Buffalo, a winning culture, and he’s going to be missed. Regardless of how you feel about the man, the firing hasn’t gone too smoothly from a PR perspective.
Bruce Arians sounds off on McDermott’s firing
Former NFL Coach of the Year Bruce Arians had plenty to say when he weighed in on the firing during the “Pat McAfee Show.” He even took a parting shot at general manager Brandon Beane, who somehow got a promotion through all of the craziness.
Arians, much like a chunk of the fan base, as can be seen across social media, thought the same thing.
“This one baffles me,” Arians said. “How Brandon Beane got elevated, and Sean McDermott got fired, that just blows my mind because they didn’t have any damn players. The guy is one of the best coaches in the league [ . . . ] and Brandon Beane gets a (expletive) raise?”
The Bills made the wrong decision in firing head coach Sean McDermott
Beane should’ve been the one to walk out the door, not McDermott, and it’s becoming more apparent with each piece of new intel we get. I mean, just look at the roster that was given to McDermott, and pair that with McDermott’s resiliency to battle through the injuries to put a competitive team on the football field.
It was reported that one of the reasons for the departure was a disagreement when McDermott brought up a lack of talent. WIVB shared the news on Tuesday.

WIVB channel 4 ran a local poll asking fans what they thought of the decision to fire McDermott. The question asked if they agreed with the decision, with 94% of fans disagreeing with the termination.
With nearly everyone, former coaches, players, and an overwhelming majority of the fanbase, is telling you the same thing, it’s probably worth listening to. McDermott wasn’t perfect. especially in the playoffs with some serious defensive collapses, but he maximized what he was given and kept Buffalo competitive through adversity.
If this move was meant to signal accountability, the Bills may have aimed at the wrong man. All eyes will be on One Bills Drive to see how the head coaching search pans out. For now, the Bills lost a great leader in McDermott, all while promoting Brandon Beane at the same time.
There’s still plenty of hope, as there always will be, with No. 17 at quarterback. Regardless of who the next head coach is, Buffalo should have a competitive team in 2026. The offseason is just beginning. Buckle up.
