Mere hours after Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott spoke to the media and informed the masses that backup Shane Buechele has an injured neck after their first preseason game and would be out "for some time," and that he GM Brandon Beane would be speaking about how to address the position, they've done exactly that.
Wasting no time at all, the Bills have brought in journeyman quarterback Ben DiNucci to serve as a critical depth piece for the duration of the preseason.
Ben DiNucci will be a valuable preseason addition
McDermott was very open in his press availability before Monday's practice in saying that he doesn't want to expose Josh Allen or backup Mitch Trubisky to a ton of playing time in the preseason, in an attempt to make sure they are fresh and healthy for when the games begin to count in a few weeks.
With that said, losing Buechele for any amount of time was not beneficial. DiNucci will enter as a quarterback that's going to see plenty of playing time throughout the remaining two preseason games.
It works out to be only good news for DiNucci, who will have an opportunity to potentially latch on with the practice squad, or he can put more tape out there as an audition for other teams around the league in case their starter goes down to injury at some point this year. It's a solid signing for everyone involved.
DiNucci has NFL experience with the Dallas Cowboys
It's been a while since DiNucci saw meaningful exposure in the NFL, last getting regular season reps with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 when Dak Prescott was sidelined. He got one start, completing 21/40 passes for 190 yards, while also rushing five times for 22 yards. DiNucci hasn't thrown a touchdown or an interception in a regular season game.
Last year, DiNucci played in the XFL with the with the Seattle Sea Dragons. He started 10 games, leading the league with 2,671 passing yards with a 72.7% completion percentage. He also tossed 20 touchdowns with 13 interceptions.
The former 7th-round pick will get another opportunity to showcase his abilities with Buffalo.
