There are a couple wide receivers in this year's draft class that I think are going to be risers before the 2025 NFL Draft, and Matthew Golden is certainly one of them. Although, it looks like his rise is already beginning.
Previously being discussed as a Day 2 draft pick, Golden has been gaining a lot of steam as an option to go late in the first round. NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah released his Mock Draft 2.0, and in doing so, he mocked Golden to Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. Honestly, I love it.
Golden, a 21 year old wide receiver that was listed at 6-foot and 195 lbs, transferred from Houston to University of Texas for his junior season, and took off with 987 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, including a monster 7-149-1 stat line against Arizona State in the Cotton Bowl.
Buffalo absolutely has needs on defense, but depending on how the board shakes out, there's a good possibility that the defensive tackles and edge rushers that Brandon Beane likes are already off the board, leaving Golden sitting there like a ripe apple to be picked. If that's the case, he should absolutely be the selection.
The Buffalo offense could be entering the offseason without trade-acquisition Amari Cooper depending on how free agency goes, leaving a wide receiver group that's less-than inspiring. Golden would bring something to the team that is definitely needed, adding crisp release packages and downfield separation ability to a team that struggled to win vertically at times throughout the season.
Bills fans know how important Khalil Shakir is to the team as a reliable and shifty YAC slot receiver, and the jury is still out on the ceiling that last year's first pick Keon Coleman has at the NFL level. Bringing a wide receiver into the mix that adds quickness and separation ability down the field would make this a more dynamic unit that opposing defenses have to account for on a weekly basis. If this is the pick, Golden would be a selection that Bills Mafia should be excited about.
