Well, scratch that. You can win meaningful games without a good quarterback. And the Buffalo Bills recognized that in the 2018 NFL Draft when they traded up to draft Josh Allen.
General manager Brandon Beane was asked about the move up for Allen, and how he feels about the criticisms that organizations face when making a move to get a quarterback.
"If [trading for Josh Allen] didn't work out, I wouldn't have be here anyway," Beane said. "If it does work out, then who gives a sh*t?"
Beane was referring to the blowback that comes from trading a hefty amount of draft capital to move up, while pointing out that it doesn't matter how much you have to give up to get the guy at quarterback if he ends up being the guy. Buffalo traded up from No. 12 to No. 7 to take Allen in the 2018 NFL Draft, and have reaped the benefits ever since.
