The Buffalo Bills are doing what needs to be done. Ahead of the NFL legal tampering period on Monday, Buffalo has made the expected move by moving on from eight-time Pro Bowl and Super Bowl MVP Von Miller.
In doing so, Buffalo saves $8.4 million towards the 2025 salary cap ahead of free agency.
Buffalo signed Miller to a six-year, $120 million contract before the 2022 season as Beane was looking for an impact pass rusher. Coming off a 9.5 sack season in 2021 split between the Broncos and the Rams, Beane was hoping to bring in the future Hall of Famer to be an impact player on defense.
Miller was off to a great start in Buffalo, registering eight sacks in his first 11 games in 2022 before tearing his ACL. Since then, the veteran hasn't been the same.
At times this year, the 35-year old pass rusher still looked to have quite a bit of juice in pass rush, but it was clear that his role was now as a limited snap, situational pass rusher that could impact the passer. He finished the year with six sacks.
It was clear at the end of the season that Miller wasn't living up to his massive contract at this point in his career. Buffalo made the choice to move on now, instead of waiting for a post-June 1 release, which would have saved them more money. Buffalo decided they needed the cash now.
Beane still has work to do with Buffalo still $1.1 million over the cap, but there are easy ways that the Bills could free up a ton of cap space. Extending Josh Allen and Connor McGovern would go a long ways, and he can always work on other restructures. Beane is busy reshaping the future of the Bills roster.
