The Buffalo Bills broke ground on their new stadium Monday, officially beginning the process of building the new Highmark Stadium.

Yes, that's correct: The Bills will have a new stadium, but it will still be called Highmark Stadium.

The deal keeps the team in Western New York until 2055. It's a 30-year deal that will put a new stadium right across the street from the current venue by 2026.

"The days of us operating as a small market are in the past," Bills executive vice president Ron Raccuia said Monday. "On the field, we have become a national brand, gaining national attention and attracting national opportunities. Our fans stretch across the country and the world and as an organization, we carry this banner with commitment and pride.

"We are so excited to see the atmosphere that's going to be created for our fans when Josh Allen and our team leads us into this new stadium."

"Congratulations, Bills fans," Bills co-owner Terry Pegula said Monday. "We all know the Bills are the only team that actually physically play in New York and we're very proud of that…

"… We're going to tear down a stadium over there that's full of memories. So we need to fill this stadium with more memories and continue our legacy. We should remember the past, but embrace the building of our future."

Per The Associated Press, the "10-0 vote was the final formal step in a lengthy process that was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and comes some 13 months after the parameters of an agreement were reached with taxpayers committed to funding $850 million of the cost."

"The Bills are now secured in Western New York and that's something we should all take pride in," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told the media during the ceremony.
