It has been a discussion for some time now that the Buffalo Bills needed help running the football.
In advance of the NFL's Trade Deadline, they made several calls and inquired about a number of running backs. Ranging from Christian McCaffrey and Jeff Wilson to Cam Akers.
Ultimately, at the cost of their own Zach Moss and a sixth-round pick, they landed some much-needed help in Nyheim Hines. The Swiss army knife RB/WR/KR/PR takes his do-it-all skills from one of the worst teams in the AFC to arguably the best.
But just as important as the player itself is what his acquisition says about the Bills organization. Understanding there's a weakness on the team and addressing it.
Despite being one of the top Super Bowl favorites, GM Brandon Beane once again shows he gets it.
The Bills were not running the ball as effectively as they had hoped. Relying for much of the yardage to come by way of MVP-favorite QB Josh Allen. Even with Devin Singletary (4.5 yards/carry) and rookie James Cook (5.5) adding value to the backfield in rotation, it hasn't been enough.
Beane and the Buffalo front office want all their bases covered for January and potentially February. Though the backfield gets smaller with the loss of Moss, it gets much faster now.
The big picture view of the front office shows fantastic scope. Not just of the team and it's needs, but moving forward. The Buffalo Bills offense is predicated on using a bevy of different running backs to open up the passing game, and tough to guard receivers to open up the running game.
With a player like Hines, they now have the best of both worlds and should be credited for addressing it. While other organizations with clear needs (Dallas, Green Bay, LA Rams, Tampa Bay, etc.) who are also contenders must stick with who they got.
Buffalo wanted more, saw more and got more. A bit of a greedy concept. But remember, Greed is good.
