Everyone and their neighbor knows the Chiefs have been the obstacle that Josh Allen and the Bills haven't been able to get past. The real question is whether or not this year's AFC Championship Game will be any different.
Allen owns Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the regular season with a 3-1 record, but in the playoffs, Mahomes has got the better of him in all three meetings. For the Bills to reach the Super Bowl for the first time in 31 years, they'll need to solve what has been their biggest question in recent seasons.
I spoke with Chiefs expert Charles Goldman and asked him three of the biggest questions to solve whether or not the Bills will finally punch their ticket to the Super Bowl. Let's get into it.
Steve Spagnuolo is an evil genius, and we all know it. But if the Bills are going to find success against the Kansas City defense, where do you think they will have the most success?
The Bills did a good job of this in Week 11, but attacking the linebackers and safeties by using heavy personnel groupings. The Chiefs have made many of the tight ends they've faced this season look like First-Team All-Pro players. If you can pass out of 12, 21, and 22 personnel, you can take advantage of this defense's weaknesses.
What have opposing defenses done this year that has been the most successful in slowing down the Kansas City offense?
It's all about how quickly you can generate pressure with the Chiefs' offense right now. Their offensive line situation has forced them to speed up their process. Instead of going for the homerun ball, it's death by 1000 paper cuts via the quick game. If you can cover the quick game and get fast pressure, the Chiefs don't currently have a successful change-up to lean on. The deep passing game isn't always enough to scare teams into shell coverage. The running game also isn't as dominant with Joe Thuney at tackle and Mike Caliendo at left guard.
Buffalo and Kansas City made a draft day trade that landed the Chiefs Xavier Worthy. How have the Chiefs been using him down the stretch that has aided him in breaking out in their offense?
Early on in Worthy's development, he was used more as a gadget receiver with designed touches and high-percentage throws, but that was just an introduction to the Chiefs' offense. Given all their injuries early in the year at wide receiver, he was thrust into several different roles. Thus, he earned more trust from the coaching staff and Patrick Mahomes. There's really no play that they won't dial up for him at this point of the year, as evidenced by his contested catch in the AFC Divisional Round. He's entered Mahomes' circle of trust, which means he can go off and have a big game at any juncture. Will it be his week against the Bills? If coverage is leaky due to some injuries on the back end, he certainly might be able to continue enjoying that success.
