It's the season of coaching changes in the NFL. Now with the Super Bowl behind us, coaching changes are the primary movement of the league between now and the NFL Scouting Combine in a few weeks.
Ken Dorsey, the former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator that was fired after a Week 10 loss to the Denver Broncos in 2023, who went on to serve in the same role in Cleveland before getting fired a day after their 3-14 season ended in 2024, has landed in a new role.
Now, Dorsey is back in the coaching ranks, this time with the Dallas Cowboys, and his title is, well, interesting.
Apparently, Dorsey will be a part of a new coaching staff in Dallas that features Brian Schottenheimer as the new head coach, Klaytron Adams as offensive coordinator, and a slew of new position coaches. His role, as explained by Josina Anderson, will be to watch film and be a "scheme generalist," I guess.
What exactly does a "scheme generalist" do? More surprisingly is the fact that the term is a generalist, and not a specialist. So his role is to just generally contribute to the scheme in some way, or something?
Dorsey does bring with him plenty of NFL coaching experience, something that offensive coordinator Klaytron Adams doesn't have, at least not as a coordinator. Adams worked in the college ranks as offensive position coaches until making the jump to the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts as an assistant offensive line coach in 2019-2020, followed by working with the team's tight ends in 2021-2022. Adams then spend 2023-2024 working as the offensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals, coaching a unit that allowed the fifth-fewest sacks in the NFL.
Surrounding Adams with coaching experience is a smart move. I can't wait to learn more about what Dorsey will be doing as a scheme generalist, though.
