The New York Jets decided to drop a surprise on the rest of the league on Tuesday morning, firing head coach Robert Saleh coming off a loss in London to the Minnesota Vikings. The Jets are currently 2-3, which isn't ideal for a team that has championship aspirations with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.
The timing might seem odd to some, but the Buffalo Bills might be playing a large factor in the decision.
Buffalo is coming to town for a Monday Night Football matchup that will play a huge role in determining this year's race for the AFC East crown. Miami looks like they're currently dead in the water without Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback. The Patriots have the worst offensive line in the league.
The Bills currently sit atop the division, but they've dropped each of their last two games. Buffalo enters this tilt with a one game lead. An early game in the season will have Buffalo at 4-2 and the Jets at 2-4, or will see both teams tied at 3-3.
Firing Saleh seems like an all-in gamble to shake something up and try to come away with a win. It seems important to note that Saleh is 2-4 against the Bills in his Jets' tenure. Er, was. Was 2-4.
Both teams enter the matchup on Monday Night Football with plenty of questions. Buffalo has seen Josh Allen only account for one total touchdown in their last two games, and Rodgers is coming off a three-interception performance. This game carries monumental weight for both sides, and is as close to a must-win game as exists this early in the season.
Whichever team wins will stave off a bit of heat. Whichever team loses will be facing monumental scrutiny and face countless questions about the direction of the team as the 2024 regular season continues to push on.
Teams have a history of performing well coming off the firing of a coach. Maybe the Jets are hoping that they'll find cohesion through chaos and get things turned back around.
