Buffalo's signing of wide receiver Curtis Samuel drew praise from CBS Sports with the national sports media outlet suggesting that Samuel is an upgrade over Gabe Davis.
Samuel signed a three year deal with Buffalo.
Davis, meanwhile, signed a three year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars after spending the first four years of his career with the Bills.
From CBS Sports: Maybe I'm a sucker, but I will never give up on the multi-talented Samuel. To me, this is an upgrade on Gabe Davis, at a lower cost (three years, $24 million, $15 million guaranteed) than the deal Davis got from the Jaguars. Samuel is such a versatile player, with an ability to work both on the perimeter and in the slot, as well as in the backfield. He's got deep speed and short-area quickness, and Josh Allen should have a lot of fun with him.
Calling Samuel an upgrade over Davis seems like a bit of a stretch.
Though it's not that Samuel is a downgrade. If anything, it's probably a push.
Neither player has put up gaudy numbers during their NFL careers. And neither player likely will.
At best Samuel will probably provide a stat line of 70 receptions for around 800 yards.
Davis' best season with the Bills came in 2022 when he caught 48 passes for 836 yards and seven touchdowns.
Essentially, Samuel won't be as much of a big play threat as Davis, but he'll be more active in the passing game as he's averaged 3.5 receptions per game over his career compared to 2.5 receptions per game for Davis.
The Bills had to find a way to replace Davis and they did it by adding a comparable player without breaking the bank.
