Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott met with reporters on Monday morning at the NFL owner's meetings and he confirmed an important detail for the franchise in 2023.
Earlier this offseason, the Bills announced that defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier will be taking the 2024 season off from coaching.
The assumption after the announcement from Buffalo has been that McDermott will call defensive plays for the Bills in 2023, but it wasn't a certainty.
McDermott finally confirmed on Monday that he will indeed call defensive plays for Buffalo this upcoming season.
McDermott served as the Carolina Panthers' defensive coordinator from 2011 to 2016. He was also the Philadelphia Eagles' defensive coordinator from 2009 to 2010.
In 2013, the Panthers had the No. 2 scoring defense in the NFL. In 2015, they had the No. 6 scoring defense in the league.
McDermott clearly has the skills to call defensive plays at an elite level. The only real concern is whether or not it's too much on him due to his head coaching responsibilities (several head coaches call offensive plays for what it's worth).
Of course, McDermott has always had a heavy influence on Buffalo's defense, so this won't be a huge departure from what he was doing. It will just require a little more of his attention on game days.
