Bills could make a splash before free agency even begins with blockbuster trade to help bolster the defense
This would be a huge get for the Buffalo Bills.
The Buffalo Bills could get an immediate boost to their pass rush with the latest league development. It’s been reported that Minnesota Vikings star pass rusher Jonathan Greenard is available via trade. Adam Schefter broke the news that the Vikings would like to keep Greenard, but they also have salary cap issues that they’re working through that have led to the trade conversations.
Buffalo has been reportedly interested in a handful of pass rushers, including Las Vegas superstar Maxx Crosby. General manager Brandon Beane is leaving no stone unturned this offseason, and should continue that by taking a look at what it would take to bring in Greenard.
Greenard has been an absolute stud over the past two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. As PFSN reported, over the past two years he’s totalled 15 sacks, 127 pressures, 33 quarterback hits, 16.7% pressure rate and forced five fumbles. He’s a one man wrecking crew who would make an immediate impact.
Greenard to Buffalo would cost most likely at least a second-round pick
Tyler Forness, A to Z Sports Minnesota Vikings writer, fielded trade offers for Greenard where I had sent over a third-round pick to acquire Greenard. It’s likely that this won’t cut it and the team would have to send over a second-round pick, but getting a true playmaker to add to Jim Leonhard’s defense sending over a second-round pick might be a no-brainer as well.
Forness broke down what makes Greenard so special, and what he could add to the mix in Buffalo that’s been desperately missing. For those who remember the divisional round loss to the Denver Broncos, the pass rush was non-existent, failing to bring quarterback Bo Nix down even once in the contest.
“The Vikings potentially moving on from Jonathan Greenard is a tough one. He does have a salary cap hit of over $22 million, but his performance is the engine behind the success of Brian Flores’ defense. He was nearly an All Pro in 2024 with 84 pressures and 12.5 sacks. His explosiveness off the ball is a huge factor in his ability to win on the line of scrimmage. He’s the best player on the Vikings’ defense and a dominant pass rusher. With the defense in Buffalo, Greenard can fit anyway they choose to implement it, as he’s thrived in both an odd and even front.” — Tyler Forness
That’s the kind of impact player Buffalo has been missing off the edge for years. When the pass rush dissappears in the biggest moments, it puts far too much pressure on the secondary and forced quarterback Josh Allen to player hero ball on the other side of the field.
If the Vikings are truly open to dealing Greenard because of their cap situation, Beane should at least pick up the phone. A second-round pick isn’t cheap, but landing a proven disruptor who can change games in January might be exactly what this defense needs to finally get over the hump.
