The Buffalo Bills S Damar Hamlin has reached almost superhero status.
Last year, Hamlin nearly died on the football field in a contest against the Cincinnati Bengals in which he suffered a reported cardiac arrest. Quick thinking and immediate CPR from Bills hero and assistant athletic trainer Denny Kellington is a big reason why Hamlin is alive today.
Since that day, Hamlin has been making national headlines left and right. From going to capitol hill to advocate AEDs in high schools to traveling across the country with the Chasing M's foundation, he's done so much outside of the game of football.
What's more, on the football field, Hamlin has made his presence known in just one preseason game. I previously wrote about Hamlin blitzing during the Colts game and forcing a turnover on downs, a remarkable chapter in his journey for recovery.
Will Damar Hamlin make the roster?
With the Bills secondary loaded and players like Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer returning to action, along with the team picking up Taylor Rapp, there's one question: Are the Bills going to release/cut Damar Hamlin?
Hamlin is a hero in Buffalo and the Bills Mafia absolutely loves him. This isn't a knock on Hamlin but rather an important question we wanted to dive into as the season is inching closer away. Taking away the traumatic injury and his remarkable story, let's look at his stats and where the team currently sits at the S position.
As we mentioned, the Bills secondary is finally healthy after Poyer suffered some injuries throughout the season and Hyde was lost for the entire year after the home opener against the Tennessee Titans. Those two are an absolute lock and a game-changing duo in the backfield.
So, Hamlin will not be a starter. But what about depth at the position? Who do the Buffalo Bills currently have behind Poyer and Hyde in that position?
I wrote after the Bills released their first unofficial depth chart on some surprises there. While it's not concrete, it does give a first glimpse at what the team could potentially be looking at. Here is the unofficial depth chart the team released.
Behind Poyer, as we mentioned, is Rapp, who is looking to bounce back and make waves this season as a key piece of depth for the team, and potentially the future at the position. Buffalo loves their underdogs and there's a very real possibility Rapp can shine in this new McDermott-lead defense. Rapp, on the unofficial depth chart, is sitting behind Poyer.
Behind Hyde in their depth chart, Buffalo has Hamlin and Cam Lewis. Lewis, as I reported previously, has been balling out in camp before suffering an injury that's seen him miss the past few practices.
Then, there's Dean Marlowe, Zayne Anderson, and Jared Mayden. Ultimately, Hamlin will have to compete with Lewis for that last safety position, and we like his chances.
Let's compare both Lewis' and Hamlin's careers and how they stack up to one another.
Lewis, entering his fourth season, has appeared in a total of 25 games. When the injury bug slammed into the Bills team, Lewis was able to come in and help the team. Seeing an uptick in games where he was active last season with 13 and one game started. Lewis didn't light up the stat sheet but has a respectable career, in limited playing time, that's seen him amass 34 combined tackles, one pass defended, and one forced fumble.
Now, Hamlin, entering his third year in the league took an important next step last season after injuries to the secondary. While Lewis had one start, Hamlin had 13 starts last season in 15 games. Additionally, in his first season, Hamlin was active for 14 games. Hamlin has amassed four passes defended, one forced fumble, 93 combined tackles, and 3 quarterback hits.
It's Hamlin's job to lose and we would be absolutely floored if the team made a decision to part ways with him. His playing time may be limited with Poyer and Hyde returning to the field, but he's so beloved in Buffalo it's hard to imagine the front office just saying goodbye and allowing another team to pick up the talented safety.
Bills’ Damar Hamlin helps get a turnover on downs on one of his first plays
The Buffalo Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, wrote yet another chapter in his remarkable journey. Not long into the first quarter, Hamlin made his presence felt.
