Dion Dawkins is one of one in the National Football League.

And there’s no denying that he’s been instrumental to offensive linemen across the league. Dawkins was a loud advocate for the Protector of the Year award, and could very well see himself raise the hardware when the season ends. He’s one of the best at his position in the league and has been a staple on the Bills’ offensive line since he was drafted. What’s even more impactful is the work that Dawkins does in the community, with Dion’s Dreamers, a foundation he started, having the “goal of providing mentorship and support to young men and women in underserved communities, as well as those in a place of mental, financial, or physical hardship.”

Even more so, Dawkins was named the NFLPA MVP of Week 10 for his recent actions with local schools in the area. Dawkins took “three different classes of students to all-expenses paid educational outings through his “Shnow Day” field trip program,” according to the official website.

So, this latest honor is BEYOND fitting for the Bills starter.

Buffalo Mayor Chris Scanlon announced that on Friday, Nov. 4, he will be giving Dawkins a key to the city.

“Dion represents everything that makes Buffalo special — hard work, heart, and a commitment to lifting others up,” Scanlon wrote, “Through his non-profit organization @DionsDreamers, he’s impacted countless children and families across the City of Buffalo and Western New York, inspiring all of us to give back and spread kindness.”

The celebration will occur in Niagara Square from 5:00–7:00 PM, with the Key to the City ceremony beginning at 5:30 PM.

“Let’s come together to celebrate one of Buffalo’s biggest hearts — both on and off the field,” Scanlon concluded.

He’s been consistent and has always given love to Buffalo. We’ve got a good one, and Dawkins deserves all the accolades, and then some.

What is the Protector of the Year Award?

Dawkins was instrumental in helping the NFL create the new Protector of the Year Award, which will honor the best offensive lineman each season.

“This Protector of the Year award is finally giving the big boys up front the respect we deserve,” Dion Dawkins said after the award was officially created. “I’ve been knocking on doors and spearheading this movement because offensive linemen are the true foundation of every team’s success. We might not have all the fancy stats as the skinnies or end up on a highlight reel every week, but without us, there’s no rushing titles, passing titles, or touchdowns. This award is for all the unsung heroes who put in work every snap. I won’t stop fighting to give offensive linemen the respect and recognition we deserve.”

The award will be given at NFL Honors, and it would be beyond fitting if the first one goes to Dawkins after all he did to get offensive linemen the recognition they deserve.
