Bills get a disappointing Darius Slay update that raises real questions about what might be unfolding behind the scenes
A shocking turn of events for Darius Slay and the Buffalo Bills.
The Buffalo Bills just can’t have nice things, I suppose.
On Tuesday, the team signed veteran cornerback Darius Slay to the active roster. It was a surprising move considering the current state of the cornerback room, but adding a player like Slay was an exciting one to say the least.
Well, while it was a bit longer than wide receiver Antonio Brown’s tenure in Buffalo, Slay’s career with the Bills appears to have ended before it even began. Now, the Bills do retain his rights, so if he intends to return, it has to be for the Bills.

Less than 24 hours after the exciting announcement, Slay has reportedly told Buffalo he will not be joining the team and is taking some time away from football to decide if he wants to retire or suit up again. Playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers must’ve just been so bad that he never wanted to touch a football again, even with a winning team like the Buffalo Bills.
Slay’s tenure with Buffalo ends before it begins
It was reported that the Philadelphia Eagles had also put in a waiver claim for the veteran cornerback, but Buffalo had priority and scooped him up. Unfortunately for Slay, you can’t pick and choose which teams sign you when you’re on waivers. It just feels like he was trying desperately to get back to Philly, but Buffalo had other plans.
As we previously discussed, this was a low-risk, high-reward move for the Bills, and Slay would have provided some much-needed insurance at the cornerback position with the playoffs looming. Buffalo currently has Maxwell Hairston, Christian Benford, and Tre’Davious White holding down duties in the cornerback room, but a few injuries could derail that position.
Not to bring up past trauma, but remember in the playoffs last season when Kaiir Elam needed to come in and compete, and it was an utter disaster. This felt like a move where the team wanted to avoid a situation like that from happening down the stretch.
So while Slay’s Buffalo chapter lasted about as long as a Steelers offensive drive, the Bills now pivot back to what they know: Lean on the young guys, stay healthy, and pray the postseason doesn’t force another Elam emergency cameo. Yes, I know he’s not on the team anymore, but you get what I’m saying. Bills Mafia has lived that nightmare once; no one’s interested in a sequel.
