The Cincinnati Bengals had a lot to say after upsetting the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game.
Bengals cornerback was the most outspoken of the group, taking his trash talk from the field to Twitter. Apple trolled Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs, despite being one of the worst starting cornerbacks in the NFL for the duration of the 2022 regular season.
Former Bills running back Le’Sean McCoy took issue with Apple’s banter. Shady questioned Apple’s trash-talking credentials on his I AM ATHLETE podcast, which is known for holding nothing back.
“Eli Apple was the 10th pick in the first round and in year seven he’s been on four teams,” McCoy said. “He’s got no All-Pros. He got zero Pro Bowls. He barely can pick his own number.”
McCoy told no lies. Apple was drafted 10th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. After a rift with the coaching staff, New York dealt Apple in his third season in the NFL.
He’s played in 88 games during his seven-year career, but has just five interceptions to show for it.
To sum up McCoy’s statements, if a player is going to talk the talk he better be willing to back it up. Apple is backpacking on his team’s success despite little individual production throughout his career.
Karma has a funny way of coming full circle in the sports world. Matched up with the Kansas City Chiefs in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game, it would not be surprising if Patrick Mahomes chooses to exploit Apple’s coverage deficiencies early and often.
