Bills Mafia has a long and love-filled relationship with safety Jordan Poyer. When the former seventh-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft found his way to Buffalo in 2017, he would go on to anchor the defensive backfield for seven seasons.
It was a particularly stinging signing when Poyer decided to sign as a free agent with the AFC East division rival Miami Dolphins. On Sunday, Poyer saw himself become even more of a villain with a hit on Bills' rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman in the fourth quarter.
Football is a fast game. You're dealing with elite athletes colliding at full speed, so hits often tend to look worse when slowed down. Poyer went in hard, trying to dislodge the ball from Coleman, which he was successful in doing.
Where the line was crossed on this hit was Poyer launching himself, helmet first, into the facemask of Coleman. Poyer was flagged for unnecessary roughness, but Coleman got the worst of it. The receiver has a wrist injury that is currently being further evaluated.
The Bills are clearly in a different league, metaphorically, than the Dolphins are this year. Buffalo is currently second in the AFC standings with a 7-2 record, while Miami is staring at the inverse at 2-7.
You know what Harvey Dent said — you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Poyer lining up for a hated rival and delivering a hard hit to the head of our ascending rookie wide receiver certainly has him on track for the latter, as hard as it is for Bills Mafia to accept.
Poyer, who is only on a one-year deal with Miami, might have already played his last game against Buffalo, depending on what happens for him this off-season.
