Bills forced to make drastic roster adjustment after Brandin Cooks signing just days ahead of Steelers matchup
Thanks for the memories, Elijah Moore.
The Buffalo Bills brought in wide receiver Brandin Cooks on Tuesday, giving quarterback Josh Allen another weapon. While the move may not have been the splashiest, the fan base should be excited about what the veteran pass-catcher has to offer at this stage of his career.
With the acquisition, the Bills needed to make some roster moves in order to maintain the 53-man roster. The team has since released wide receiver Elijah Moore, who was brought in during the offseason. Moore was cut fewer than 24 hours after the Cooks deal was finalized, marking the end of his career in Buffalo — at least for now. If he clears waivers, the Bills could sign him back to the practice squad.
He signed a one-year deal in March and has appeared in nine games for the Bills. In those contests, he has caught nine passes for 112 yards and no touchdowns, a far cry from what the team was hoping when they had signed him to pair with Allen in the offense.
Thanks for the memories, Elijah Moore
At the time, Moore was an exciting pickup, as is any move that brings a playmaker into Buffalo. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find the field or get schemed open in any meaningful way outside of a couple of splash plays. The jet sweep wasn’t working, and throwing behind the line of scrimmage didn’t result in too many big plays for the veteran pass catcher.
SI.com’s Ralph Ventre believed that this would be the move that the team would make after signing Cooks, and he was spot on with his analysis.
“Ultimately, Moore, who is playing on a one-year contract, appears to be the odd man out,” Ventre wrote. “Although quarterback Josh Allen has complimented the wide receiver’s work ethic on multiple occasions, Moore has struggled to become a consistent factor on offense.”
At the end of the day, this is the business side of the NFL. Moore worked, stayed ready, and earned Allen’s respect even if the production was never fully realized. Now, the Bills turn the page with Cooks in the mix and a pivotal stretch of the season at hand. If Cooks can bring even a fraction of the spark Buffalo hopes for, this could help the team get back on track.
We wish nothing but the best for Moore in his future endeavors.
