Bills head coach makes another bold move that quietly signals bigger changes ahead in Buffalo this offseason
Joe Brady has been on a tear lately.
The Buffalo Bills’ new head coach is shaking things up once again at One Bills Drive. He’s made the coaching staff in his image, bringing in some new faces with plenty of experience across college and the NFL. The latest move is yet another example of that. Brady isn’t done fleshing out his coaching staff or roster, with an exciting update coming from Daniel Gallen, who covers Penn State.
It’s been reported that the Buffalo Bills have finalized a deal to hire former NFL quarterback Trace McSorley as an offensive assistant on Brady’s staff. McSorley had spent the past few years at Penn State, beginning his coaching career, and now gets a chance to come to the NFL.
Trace McSorley has had quite the career, already
The Baltimore Ravens originally selected McSorley in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, where he was taken with the 197th overall pick. He was a former standout quarterback at Penn State and was drafted for his athletic ability and potential utility in Baltimore’s offense, which at the time was already led by quarterback Lamar Jackson.
McSorley finished his senior season with the Nittany Lions with 2,530 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns, and seven interceptions to go along with 798 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.
He spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons with the Ravens before taking a year off and then joining the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. In three years in the league, McSorley has appeared in nine games with an 0-1 win-loss record, completing 48 of 93 passes for 702 yards and a touchdown with five interceptions. He added 21 carries for 79 yards throughout his short NFL career.
He had short stints with the New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Washington Commanders before hanging up the cleats and moving on to the college level to coach.
McSorley was an assistant quarterbacks coach on John Franklin’s staff. Even after Franklin was fired, new head coach Matt Campbell retained McSorley for the 2026 season.
McSorley and Brady have a history together
He and Joe Brady have worked together in the past, with McSorley working with the new Bills head coach while Brady was a graduate assistant at Penn State in 2015 and 2016. Once again, Brady is looking to his past to help build the future in Buffalo.
This move isn’t about what Mcsorley was as a player; it’s about what Brady believes he can be as a coach.
Brady is clearly building a staff rooted in trust, familiarity, and shared philosophy. He knows how McSorley thinks, how he communicates, and how he sees the game. That matters, especially in a building centered around maximizing quarterback play.
For a team built around quarterback Josh Allen’s prime, every detail counts. Every voice in the quarterback room matters. If McSorley can help sharpen Allen’s preparation, connect with young passers, or bring a fresh perspective from the college ranks, this hire will quietly pay dividends.
Once again, Brady isn’t just filling seats on a coaching staff; he’s shaping the future of the Bills in his image.
