The Buffalo Bills got off to a rough start in the 2024 NFL Preseason, taking a blowout 33-6 loss to the Chicago Bears. As Josh Allen pointed out, "it's preseason, at the end of the day," but there still remains plenty of work for the Bills to do to make sure they're ready to go for their Week 1 opener at home against the Arizona Cardinals.
Sean McDermott and Allen delivered a clear message following their first preseason loss – "The standard is the standard," McDermott said. This week, which will include a joint practice on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be all about living up to that standard.

Steelers vs Bears will provide another opportunity to live up to the standard
What we saw throughout the game on Saturday was not a Bills team that looked polished and competitive. Buffalo had 11 penalties for 75 yards, something that McDermott will not be thrilled about.
While the starting offense was on the field, however, there was a good amount for Bills fans to be excited about. Allen looked like Allen, distributing the ball and taking off to pick up a first down with his legs. The passing game looked fun and full of variety, including prioritizing getting the ball in space to Curtis Samuel and Khalil Shakir (who looked fantastic), and rookie Keon Coleman got looks as the starting X receiver.
The defense got gashed for some big plays, but then settled in to stand tall in third down and red zone opportunities, at least early in the game. Bobby Babich, defensive coordinator, got his first opportunity to call plays in game action.
There's plenty still to learn, and it's important for Bills fans to keep in mind that the preseason is more about evaluating individual players than it is about evaluating the team as a whole. Going into their second preseason contest, however, the Bills will be looking for a little more compete, a little more polish, and for some players to stand out on their way to trimming the roster to 53 players before Week 1.
