Jim Leonhard reveals why he chose Buffalo with a terrifying message for opposing defenses when the Bills take the field in 2026
Welcome to Buffalo, Jim Leonhard.
The Buffalo Bills are taking on a new identity with head coach Joe Brady taking over the position. He’s filled his front office with some aggressive individuals, bringing in offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. and defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, among others, in his first few weeks.
Why did so many of these people choose Buffalo and a new head coach? Leonhard said he had a few conversations with different teams, but ultimately chose Buffalo because of his familiarity with the team after being a player. Having that familiarity with the organization and fanbase and knowing where they are is what led him to choose Buffalo.
What’s more, Leonhard had a message that opposing defenses should be terrified about. He’s ready to shake things up in Western New York, and if you weren’t already excited about the hire, you’re about to be. Leonhard is ready to take this thing head-on and change what it means to play defense for the Buffalo Bills. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to run through a brick wall.
“We’re going to be an attacking defense up front and in the back end,” Leonhard said. “We’re going to attack the football [ . . . ] we are going to be aggressive and fly around [ . . . ] we are going to force them to react to us. I don’t like to counter punch.”
Leonhard is shaking things up at One Bills Drive
Things have to change at One Bills Drive. The run defense struggled, and once again in the postseason, Buffalo allowed a team to hang a 30 burger on their heads. Leonhard fully understands this, and it’s something that he prioritized during his press conference.
“There’s gonna be change,” Leonhard said.
Leonhard, in his opening press conference, mentioned safety Cole Bishop by name and was more than impressed with what he saw from the budding star. Bishop really came into his own once safety Jordan Poyer joined the team and was able to pour into him.
“Was a very big fan of Cole coming out of college,” Leonhard said. “The versatility he has, he is a jack of all trades [ . . . ] he is the type of safety I tried to be myself.”
Leonhard played for the Bills from 2005 to 2007 and again in 2013 as a defensive back. He played in 14 games with six interceptions, nine passes defensed, and 118 combined tackles.
Leonhard’s message was loud and clear: the passive days are over.
Buffalo isn’t interested in sitting back and reacting anymore; it wants to dictate terms on defense. Between his familiarity with the organization, his personal investment in the fan base, and a defensive philosophy built on aggression, violence, speed, and disruption, the Bills finally look ready to turn the page on a unit that too often broke at the worst possible time.
If this defense becomes what Leonhard says it will be, One Bills Drive won’t just feel different, it’ll be a nightmare for opposing offenses. And honestly, it’s about time.
