Josh Allen didn't know if he was playing in the Buffalo Bills' first preseason game against the Chicago Bears when he spoke with reporters on Wednesday. Or in the preseason, at all.

On Thursday, head coach Sean McDermott answered the question: Allen, along with other starters, will play "roughly a quarter" on Saturday. Which means the Bills-Bears preseason matchup is must-see TV when considering we'll get a taste of an Allen-Williams showdown.

"As far as the game goes, we're looking forward to playing," McDermott said ahead of Thursday's practice. "… Playtime-wise, I know that's what you're looking for, the 1s will play. They'll play roughly a quarter, give or take. It's really, to me, getting them ramped up and ready to go for the season. It's an important step [and] hard to simulate the speed of the game, so, getting that in preseason is important. Going through warmups and the energy that comes with playing a game in front of fans and being able to manage that.

"So there's a lot of reasons for it. Like I said, it's just another step."

McDermott also acknowledged that Allen's new receiving corps plays a factor in the decision, which makes a lot of sense. As we all know, the Bills traded Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans a few months ago, leaving Allen without his top target over the last few years.

Typically the first preseason game is just a date on a calendar and something that the general public doesn't pay attention to – and for good reason. It's usually reserves and backups playing and while that's important for team-building and figuring out the final roster, it doesn't do much fan service.

But, that won't be the case on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET in Orchard Park.
