Bills lose quarterback to the Chiefs in unexpected fashion ahead of final stretch of the regular season
The Buffalo Bills got a great preseason from Shane Buechele, but he’s heading back to Kansas City.
The Buffalo Bills have been forced to shake up the roster after the Week 16 win over the Cleveland Browns. While Bills Mafia is still celebrating the way-too-close-for-comfort win, things are changing at One Bills Drive.
Quarterback Shane Buechele has been picked up off the practice squad by the Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, they have had some really rotten injury luck as of late. Quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Gardner Minshew hurt their knees in back-to-back weeks, forcing them to look elsewhere for some quarterback help.
Buechele has history with the Kansas City Chiefs
Buechele spent the 2021-2023 seasons with Kansas City, so he has familiarity with the team. Over three seasons with Kansas City in the preseason, he was 97-of-151 (64.2%) for 1,106 yards and nine touchdowns with six interceptions. He didn’t register a single snap in the regular season.
The talented signal-caller was serving as the Bills’ third quarterback, being stashed on the team’s practice squad. Buechele spent the entire 2024 season on injured reserve after suffering a neck injury in the preseason and then signed a one-year futures contract with Buffalo in 2025.
Since he was signed off the practice squad, the rules dictate that Kansas City must sign him to the 53-man roster since he officially passed his physical.
Thanks for the memories, Shane Buechele
Buechele was a preseason hero for Buffalo during the 2025 campaign. He had a standout performance in the team’s final preseason game, completing 25-of-30 passes for 278 yards and a touchdown while adding five carries for 20 yards, and led the offense to score on five of eight possessions.
Fans may remember his beautiful pass to Bills receiver Tyrell Shavers. Shavers hauled in the one-handed touchdown, cementing his spot on the 53-man roster. Buechele was dialed in the entire game.
Throughout the entire 2025 preseason for Buffalo, Buechele was 36-of-46 for 380 yards and a touchdown with a passer rating of 108.3 in three games played.
While Buechele never saw the field in meaningful action for Buffalo, his strong preseason performance and familiarity with the Chiefs’ system made him an easy target for a team needing a quarterback. The Bills now move forward without their third quarterback option, while Buechele gets another opportunity with a franchise that already knows what he can do.
