Bills get a massive win that will greatly impact 2026 and beyond, and it couldn’t have come at a more perfect time for the organization
A huge win for the Buffalo Bills in the early stages of the offseason.
The Buffalo Bills got a massive win without playing a single snap. It will be a huge help for Joe Brady and the front office as they navigate a challenging 2026 NFL offseason.
While it’s the offseason, that doesn’t mean that Buffalo can’t have nice things. The league is moving fast, and the latest development could mean great things for the Bills moving forward.
Tom Pelissero broke the news that the NFL has informed teams that the 2026 salary cap is expected to fall between $301.2 and $305.7 million per club. This is the first time in league history that the NFL salary cap has gone above the $300 million mark.
To put it into perspective, last year’s salary cap was $279.2 million and even higher than recent predictions from Over The Cap ($295.5 million). As Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports Kansas City reported, it could be $100 million higher than during the 2022 NFL season ($208.2 million).
What is the Bills’ projected salary cap space for the 2026 NFL season
The Buffalo Bills have one of the worst salary cap situations in all of football. Over The Cap is working off a base salary cap of $303.5 million, and the Bills are near the bottom of the league in available cap space. Buffalo has negative $7 million in cap space and negative $11.5 million in effective cap space.
It’s not the worst in the league by any measure, as the Bills are in a better position than the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, and Kansas City Chiefs.
Buffalo will take all the help it can get with the increase in cap space, though it has its work cut out for it as the new year rolls around in March.
Buffalo has some work to do if it wants to go out and get help for quarterback Josh Allen while also bolstering the defense for new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, so the team can run a 3-4 defense effectively. Some key restructures to guys like Allen and offensive tackle Dion Dawkins will go a long way. Still, the team has some difficult decisions ahead, including roster cuts and construction.
Players like tight end Dawson Knox and nickel cornerback Taron Johnson could be on the outside looking in after taking a look at their cap hits and where Buffalo stands as the new year inches closer.
Buffalo has until March 11 to get under the cap, and the league aims to announce the official 2026 salary cap number before that date.
More money is a good thing, as it will help first-time head coach Joe Brady potentially retain some free agents, all while pursuing a higher-priced outside free agent for the upcoming season.
At the end of the day, this doesn’t magically fix Buffalo’s cap crunch, but it does change the margin for error. A record-setting salary cap gives the Bills more levers to pull, more creativity to deploy, and a little more breathing room as Brady shapes his first roster.
The work won’t be easy, and tough choices are still coming, but for a team staring down a pivotal offseason, this is the kind of league-wide break that can quietly alter everything.
