Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson won his second NFL MVP award on Thursday at the "NFL Honors."
He won the award, despite not finishing in the top 10 for passing touchdowns and passing yards, becoming the first winner to do so.
This, along with several other factors, is why MVP voter, and creator of DVOA Aaron Schatz gave his vote to Josh Allen, the only one out of 50 voters to not give Jackson his first place vote.
"When it came to individual stats, starting with DVOA, Lamar Jackson did not perform as well as some other quarterbacks this year," Schatz said while appearing on the "Locked On Ravens" podcast. "And it's not that it was close. It wasn't like it was Brock Purdy and Josh Allen and Dak Prescott and Lamar Jackson all in a tight little bind… [Jackson] was fairly behind. And then I said 'well, I'm not perfect. Not everything I do is perfect. Let's go look at some competing advanced stats. So I looked at PFF grades. And I looked at SIS total points. And I looked at EPA. And I looked at win probability. And I looked at ESPN QBR. And every single one of these metrics had Josh Allen and Dak Prescott ahead of Lamar Jackson."
Allen finished the season with the most total touchdowns and total offensive yards of any player in the NFL, yet only received the one MVP vote and was snubbed for Offensive Player of the Year, as well.
