Whispers and rumors have been swirling around Foxboro all season about whether this would be Bill Belichick's last season in New England.

While it is not confirmed by any means, Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston is reporting that a decision has been made internally by the Patriots to move on from the legendary coach at the end of this season.

Belichick has caused Buffalo, and the rest of the AFC East for that matter, a lot of pain over his two-decade stint as Patriots head coach, winning the division in 17 of his 24 seasons.

However, Belichick leaving New England is the last thing Bills fans should want. It's clear that Belichick the general manager has lost all touch of reality when it comes to obtaining assets. Over the last handful of years, he's given big-money contracts to the likes of Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith, while also vastly overpaying for DeVante Parker, Nelson Agholor, and Kendrick Bourne. Not to mention the never-ending carousel of mediocre quarterbacks that have come and gone since Tom Brady took his talents to Tampa. Speaking of Tom Brady leaving, the Patriots are 28-35 since No. 12 went south.

The Patriots are stuck living in 2003 when it comes to team building and how they try to win games. Belichick may be the best coach of all time, but the game has passed him by. If he is indeed fired at season's end, it's very likely the Patriots target Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who will be the most sought-after head coaching candidate this offseason. The Patriots will also have a very high draft pick and will likely be able to land either USC quarterback Caleb Williams or North Carolina's Drake Maye, giving them a ton of exciting potential for years to come.

Now, is this to say that the Patriots would immediately overthrow Buffalo as the top dog in the division? No. But dealing with Mac Jones and the current version of Bill Belichick sounds a lot better than having Caleb Williams and an offensive mastermind take over and build for the future.

For the first time, Belichick isn't feared in the division. His presence is very much welcomed by his foes. New England would be smart to start over, but Bills fans should hope they keep riding the same train they've been riding for the last 23 years.
