Bills’ rising star in hot water with coaching staff for what he was caught doing before unexpected loss to the Patriots
A less-than-ideal update coming out of One Bills Drive.
Eagle-eyed fans may have caught that during the first series of the Buffalo Bills’ loss to the New England Patriots, wide receiver Keon Coleman wasn’t on the field to start the game. This wasn’t a personnel decision for specific plays, but rather it was punishment for the young receiver.
Head coach Sean McDermott clarified that Coleman was, in fact, benched. It’s unclear exactly what Coleman did before the game, but leading up to the contest, the young receiver did enough to warrant benching.
It’s not the first time that Coleman has been benched for disciplinary reasons. The rising star was sidelined at the start of the 2024 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars after he was late to a meeting.
McDermott stated that he was seeking more consistency from Coleman when speaking to the media on Monday.
“Growth, maturation. That leads to consistency more than anything, and like anything else, you have winning habits, it leads to winning on the field,” McDermott said. “And so, that’s really what we’re trying to create, and that’s what we’re here to do is help young men, in this case, grow and mature and develop and become professionals, and that’s part of the process.”
Coleman has had a rocky start to the 2025 season
Ahead of the season, Coleman was the talk of training camp. His rise in the ranks to become one of the premier pass catchers in the offense was clear. Even offensive lineman Dion Dawkins got in on the fun, saying that the league better get ready for Year 2 of Coleman.
Through five weeks of the season, Coleman hasn’t quite lived up to the hype just yet. Coleman has totaled 21 receptions for 226 yards and two touchdowns.
Offensive coordinator Joe Brady opened up about what he’s hoping to see more from Coleman as the season progresses.
“When he’s there doing his job, doing his 1/11th and just being accountable to the 10 other guys in the huddle with him at any given moment,” Brady said. “You see the growth, you see the plays that he has out there, but it just needs to be the consistent level.”
Coleman will go up and “Moss” a defender with a great catch, but then on the next play, he will be a little out of rhythm with his quarterback for a dropped pass or a miscue. Having Coleman be more consistent in the passing game will go a long way toward continued success.
While it’s unclear what Coleman did ahead of the Patriots game, it warranted him being benched, which is never what you want coming from one of the top options in the offense. There’s still plenty of time for Coleman to right the ship, but you could feel the frustration from the coaching staff.
Coleman’s talent isn’t in question; his consistency is. If he learns from this and finds his rhythm, it could be the turning point that helps unlock the Bills’ offense the rest of the way.
