The Buffalo Bills are moving on from head coach Sean McDermott in a shocking move. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport broke the news on X.

Now, the Bills are the latest NFL team to enter the head coaching carousel.

The news comes after yet another playoff loss by the Bills, this time at the hands of the Denver Broncos. Another phenomenal season that fell just short of the ultimate goal of reaching a Super Bowl. It has been a common occurrence over the past few seasons, with Buffalo getting some big momentum but ultimately falling short with some heartbreaking defeats in the postseason.

Sean McDermott is fired

Many believe that quarterback Josh Allen’s prime has been wasted with poor roster construction and, sometimes more importantly, some bad coaching decisions late into some of the most pivotal games of Allen’s career. McDermott appears to be the scapegoat here in a way, as it seemed as though if anyone was going to get the boot, it would’ve been general manager Brandon Beane.

Nevertheless, McDermott is now gone, and after taking a look at the Bills’ last five playoff games, that’s where things have really gone wrong for McDermott and company. In four of the last five playoff matchups, the team has blown a fourth-quarter lead. The only other loss was a blowout to the Cincinnati Bengals at home. When the playoff lights get brightest, the team crumbles.

Despite having a generational quarterback at the helm, McDermott was never able to bring the team to a Super Bowl during his tenure, losing in the wild card round once, four times in the divisional round, and twice in the AFC Championship game. While wins aren’t a quarterback stat, Allen and McDermott have the most playoff wins without a Super Bowl appearance in NFL history.

General manager Brandon Beane is safe and is looking for the next head coach

Rapoport also revealed the news that general manager Brandon Beane would be remaining with the organization and would be helping the team look for a new coach. Even before the loss to the Broncos, the fanbase was divided about what type of regime change could be in store for Buffalo after an up-and-down season with more questions than answers.

Now, those questions have been answered, even if the future remains uncertain. With Beane staying put and McDermott out, Buffalo is making a clear bet that a new voice can finally push this roster over the top. The expectations won’t change, the margin for error won’t either, and whoever takes over will inherit a team built to win immediately, with no patience left for growing pains.

The Buffalo Bills now have the hottest job in football open, and it’ll be a fun ride to see what’s to come over the next several weeks and months.
