Sean McDermott delivers a powerful postgame message to key Bills players and to fans moments after win over the Browns
The Buffalo Bills head coach didn’t hold back with his postgame comments.
The Buffalo Bills walked out of Cleveland with a victory, and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters. The team took care of business and kept their playoff hopes alive in the win.
Head coach Sean McDermott spoke to the media after the win and made sure to call out the fan base in the best way possible. Bills Mafia is known to travel well, and a short trip to Cleveland was in the cards for a large number of fans from Western New York and the surrounding areas. They love their team and will travel any distance to support them in person.
McDermott put everything into perspective with his immediate comments after the victory.
“Good to get a win, guys found a way, and that’s the important part,” McDermott said. “Great job, Bills Mafia showing up. Only a short trip, but we definitely heard them even last night when we came into town, so (we) really appreciate their support.”
McDermott calls out multiple playmakers
It wasn’t the usual performance from quarterback Josh Allen, putting on his Superman cape and willing his team to victory. Instead, it was performances by running back James Cook, offensive tackle Dion Dawkins, safety Jordan Poyer, defensive tackle DaQuan Jones, and defensive end Greg Rousseau who had their fingerprints all over the matchup.
“Want to point out a couple of guys. James Cook, another 100-yard effort. Obviously, not just one guy in terms of when that happens, but he’s having a great season, ninth, I believe, of his season. Dion (Dawkins) up against a challenge today, big-time challenge and able to keep Myles (Garrett) at bay. I think he got one or half of one. It was great competition there by those two guys and the O-Line overall. And then, Greg Rousseau, big-time production today, as well as Jordan Poyer on the defensive side, and then DQ [DaQuan Jones] getting his first interception.”
Cook had another 100-yard performance, Poyer was turning back the clock with his efforts, Rousseau looked like the player that Buffalo spent big money on, Dawkins was just doing what Dawkins does best, and Jones was in the right place at the right time.
A tale of two halves for the Buffalo Bills in win vs Browns
Buffalo’s offense was thriving in the first half with three straight touchdowns. It was thanks in large part to the effort of Cook, gashing the Browns’ defense and finding the end zone on a 44-yard touchdown. Unfortunately, after Allen went down with an injury in the late stages of the first half, the offense never looked the same.
It was a swap of efforts of sorts. In the first half, the defense couldn’t stop a nose bleed and had more missed tackles than I can count on both hands. They handled their business in the second half with a turnover, some crucial sacks, and just showing up in the biggest moments of the contest. Say what you will about the defensive struggles, but they bounced back in the second half.
“I thought the stops in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter, were big for the defense. Two takeaways overall for the game, leading to nine points by the offense. Offensively, I think we started well, second half, not so much. Defensively, didn’t start as well, came back in the second half and did some things to help us win the game there, obviously.”
A win is a win is a win
It wasn’t a pretty win, and McDermott wasn’t pretending like it was. It was about toughness, resilience, and finding a way to win when things weren’t clean. The Bills didn’t blink when momentum shifted or when adversity hit mid-game. Instead, they leaned on fundamentals, one another, and walked out with a result that keeps everything in front of them.
“Toughness overall of the football team, good to see, but still plenty to work on. We need to do the basics, the basic things, better. You ask me what that is, I’ll start with basic fundamentals, and then it’ll go into executing the play, the scheme, what have you. All in all, good to get a win, we’ll take it. Got a lot of work to do as we move forward this week.”
At the end of the day, no matter how ugly it was, the Bills are 11-4. It won’t go down as a highlight-reel performance, but it doesn’t need to. Buffalo embraced the grind, trusted its depth, and walked out of Cleveland with exactly what it needed.
