Bills’ Sean McDermott reveals his plans for Gabe Davis and it’s a huge win for the organization and Josh Allen
Gabe Davis is back… well, sort of.
The Buffalo Bills brought back veteran receiver Gabe Davis with plenty of mixed emotions from the Bills Mafia. As the team is gearing up to take on the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1 of the NFL regular season, head coach Sean McDermott provided an update on Davis, and it’s a much bigger win than we initially thought. Davis is essentially a free veteran addition due to his injury and doesn’t take up a practice squad spot. Instead, he will be designated with a “practice squad/injured” designation, and the team will not have to create a spot for him by removing another player on the list.
For those who are unaware, the team’s current practice squad consists of: QB Shane Buechele, RB Frank Gore Jr., WR Stephen Gosnell, WR Kristian Wilkerson, OL Travis Clayton (International Pathway exemption), TE Keleki Latu, OL Dan Feeney, OL Kendrick Green, DT Zion Logue, DT Jordan Phillips, LB Jimmy Ciarlo, LB Keonta Jenkins, CB Dane Jackson, S Jordan Poyer, DE Andre Jones Jr., CB Jalen Kimber, S Sam Franklin Jr. Though, these names will change as the season progressess.
Sean McDermott gives fans an inside look at Gabe Davis’ return
“Gabe will rejoin us,” McDermott said. “Just not quite yet, but he will rejoin us and more than likely be at some point on the practice squad injured, in that injured category. He’s still dealing with the injury and coming back from the injury, and so, I think the vision here is that at some point, down the road, when that is. I don’t, and I don’t know that anyone knows at this point when that will be, that he can maybe help us on the field. That’s down the road, and right now we’re just focused on our practice today.”
Davis will get plenty of time to rehab in Buffalo, and it doesn’t impact a roster spot while also keeping a veteran receiver close to the team that has chemistry with the reigning MVP in Josh Allen. Allen has to be more than thrilled that his buddy is back for the team, and it’s a huge win for the organization. As I previously reported, it’s a high-reward, low-risk type of move for Davis and the team.
Buffalo is rolling out a receiving unit that consists of Keon Coleman, Khalil Shakir, Curtis Samuel, Josh Palmer, Elijah Moore, and Tyrell Shavers. However, the season is long and injuries are inevitable, and allowing Davis to rehab while not taking up a roster spot in the off-chance he’ll need to come in during the regular season is a smart move.
If Davis were to be called up at some point in the season, he’s not expected to light the league on fire or be the No. 1 option — he can ease into it, and the team can use him as they see fit. While he was unable to lock down the No. 2 option during his previous tenure in Buffalo, slotting him in as the No. 7 option should be more than okay for the fan base.
“Big Game Gabe” has had a historic career
Bills Mafia knows all too well the type of player “Big Game Gabe” can be at his ceiling, as Davis still holds the NFL record for most touchdowns in a playoff game after catching eight passes for 201 yards and four touchdowns during the divisional loss to the Chiefs in the infamous 13-second game.
Davis is a savvy veteran looking to make an impact on the football field after rehabbing from his injury, and Buffalo doesn’t have to do anything other than support him in terms of roster restructuring to achieve that.
