Broncos’ Sean Payton shows his hand and reveals special plan to try and shut down Josh Allen in Denver
Sean Payton is fired up ahead of the divisional matchup between the Buffalo Bill and the Denver Broncos.
The Buffalo Bills are traveling to Denver to take on the Broncos in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. It has all the makings for an instant classic with kickoff set for Saturday, Jan. 17.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton showed his hand a bit while speaking with the media on Tuesday. If the team wants to shut down quarterback Josh Allen and the Bills’ offense, they need to get a bit creative, and that’s exactly what Payton is doing. He’s encouraging the fans to get into the contest early and often, trying to use everything he has at his disposal to pull out the victory.
“For years, we were conditioned to raise the noise level when they broke the huddle,” Payton said. “The noise level needs to be the loudest when they enter the huddle. Can you do that? Hey, can we do that collectively for 120? No, I just need it for half the snaps in the game. Let’s say 65 snaps, of 10 seconds, that’s a huge advantage.”
Broncos Country is no slouch, and they’ll surely take what the head coach is saying and take it into the game. Bills Mafia is known to travel well, too. So here’s hoping it won’t be too loud for the Bills to run the offense.
Sean Payton is under fire for comments made to a reporter
Payton turned heads this week when he appeared to shut down a reporter simply asking a question about linebacker Dre Greenlaw returning. It’s jarring because this isn’t the type of back-and-forth you normally see between Buffalo Bills beat reporters and head coach Sean McDermott. Payton is fired up ahead of the Bills contest, and it shows in the press conference.
“You want him to attack downhill, is that your, like, what do you know about attacking downhill in the run game?” Payton asked. “You don’t know, alright, that’s right. Have him attacking downhill. It’s good to have a healthy Dre Greenlaw back in the game.”
A fired-up Payton, a raucous Denver crowd, and a quarterback who’s seen just about everything the postseason can throw at him. Payton can plead for noise, poke at the media, and try every psychological edge available, but once the ball is snapped, it still comes down to execution. When the lights are the brightest, Buffalo tends to trust No. 17 to quiet the building, anywhere.
If Payton is this animated and fired up on Tuesday, imagine the temperature at kickoff. The Broncos are swinging early, trying to tilt the margins before the game even begins. We’ll see if it’s enough, or if Josh Allen can once again turn chaos into silence.
