While there’s still time for things to turn around, it seems that head coach Sean McDermott isn’t taking things easy for the team’s Week 18 finale against the New York Jets.

In the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, quarterback Josh Allen reaggravated his foot injury and needed X-rays after the contest. Ultimately, they came back negative, but the update provided plenty for fans to be nervous about heading into the final home game before the playoffs. He suffered the initial injury in the win against the Cleveland Browns, but was able to finish the contest.

You would assume that Buffalo would rest its starters for the upcoming showdown, with little to play for considering the playoff implications. Buffalo can get as high as the No. 5 seed, with some outside help. Most likely, the team will be looking at the six- or seven-seed when it all shakes out. However, you’d be wrong, at least with the latest comments from McDermott about the showdown.

Sean McDermott makes decision for Week 18

When asked about his plans for the finale, McDermott offered, “business as usual.” Regarding Josh Allen and the starters and how the team is going about business leading up to the finale.

One would assume that it means that starters are going to be playing during the contest, which honestly, might not be the right decision. In a relatively meaningless game, getting out healthy and having the team fully intact seems like the better route to go, but I’m not a head coach, and I trust McDermott’s judgement, though many fans might disagree.

An update on Josh Allen’s injury

Allen has progressed well through his injury, with NFL Network insider Ian Rapaoport reporting on where the reigning MVP is at currently.

“All indications are he is fine and actually in a better place than he was last week,” Rapaport said. “We just don’t know right now whether or not the Bills are going to rest guys with not a lot to play for, just talking about seeding.”

At the end of the day, Week 18 will come down to how much Buffalo is willing to risk. McDermott’s “business as usual” stance sends a clear message about maintaining momentum and standards, but it also puts a spotlight on every snap Allen and the starters take.

Whether it’s a tune-up or a calculated gamble, the Bills will walk a fine line Sunday if McDermott holds with his comments. One that could either sharpen them for the playoffs, or leave fans holding their breath until the final whistle.
