The Buffalo Bills will be shorthanded against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 9. There were a few players up in the air for the game, with head coach Sean McDermott confirming some suspicions while appearing on WGR550 AM.

Linebacker Shaq Thompson, wide receiver Josh Palmer, and defensive tackle DaQuan Jones have been ruled out of the contest.

One of the big bright spots amid the injuries to linebackers Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard was Shaq Thompson. Thompson filled in nicely, consistently making plays on the defense.

While speaking to the media on Wednesday, Thompson’s injury wasn’t mentioned, but he popped up on the injury report and will be sidelined against the Chiefs. McDermott had some high praise for Thompson after the win over the New Orleans Saints.

“(Shaq) plays the position the way it’s meant to be played… It wasn’t anything Dorian was doing wrong… Dorian had a little bump at that point as well.”

Injuries continue to pile up at One Bills Drive

The defensive tackle position is a bit banged up, with rookie TJ Sanders still on injured reserve, and the recent loss to Ed Oliver. The team had signed Jordan Phillips to the active roster, and Deone Walker and Larry Ogunjobi will look to split duties. Bills Mafia is excited about Jones’ return, whenever that may be.

For Palmer, one of quarterback Josh Allen’s weapons will not be available, either. Palmer suffered an injury during the game against the Atlanta Falcons and was also considered week-to-week. One of the Bills’ biggest offseason acquisitions is unable to suit up for one of the team’s most important games of the season.

Another name to watch out for is kicker Matt Prater, who McDermott said would be practicing on Friday and didn’t give any indication of his game status. The head coach was asked about Tyler Bass’s availability, with no update from the head coach other than that he’s progressing well through his injury.

Taylor Rapp might be out for the year

For safety Taylor Rapp, McDermott said the injury could be season-ending. He said most likely the team won’t see him until next year, though he added that he’s not a doctor. For Damar Hamlin and his injury, McDermott said it would be some time before he returns to the field.

Lastly, for anyone hoping to see wide receiver Gabe Davis activated, those chances have been greatly reduced following the update from McDermott. He experienced inflammation at Thursday’s practice and won’t participate on Friday.

Even with several starters sidelined, the Bills are no strangers to overcoming adversity. Sunday’s matchup will be a chance for Buffalo’s next men up to prove they can rise to the moment against one of the league’s toughest opponents.
