Well, the Buffalo Bills’ search for their new head coach has come and gone. Sean McDermott was let go after nine seasons with the organization, winning the AFC East five times in a row but falling short of bringing the first-ever Lombardi Trophy to Western New York.

Adam Schefter reported that the Buffalo Bills and former offensive coordinator Joe Brady have agreed to a five-year deal to make Brady the team’s next head coach. It was a rather shocking move, with Buffalo having a slew of interviews for the recent vacancy. It appears that while the Bills are looking for change, they’re also looking for more of the same.

The Bills Mafia was surprised with the decision, thinking that the team would favor someone like Grant Udinski or Klint Kubiak, but Buffalo wasn’t going to wait until after the Super Bowl to interview Kubiak. Instead, the Bills wasted no time making the official decision on their next head coach.

By acting before the Super Bowl, the Bills showed urgency and a clear preference for continuity over a prolonged search. The fanbase has been divided by the decision since it was announced.

The Bills’ hiring of Joe Brady is a signal about immediacy and continuity

Brady has been with the Bills’ organization since 2022, serving as quarterbacks coach until 2023. In 2024, he took over playcalling duties and the offensive coordinator position from Ken Dorsey and never looked back.

After spending the 2024 and 2025 seasons working with quarterback Josh Allen as the offensive coordinator, Brady gets his first head coaching job in the league.

He’s been successful in pretty much every position he’s held, starting in 2017 with the New Orleans Saints as an offensive assistant coach until 2018. In 2019, Brady joined Ed Orgeron and the LSU Tigers as their passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. In his lone season, paired with quarterback Joe Burrow, Brady was named the top assistant coach during the 2019 college football season, and immediately jumped right back into the NFL afterwards.

Brady joined the Carolina Panthers for two seasons before ultimately joining Buffalo, and the rest is history.

Buffalo chose familiarity over a full reset, betting that continuity with Josh Allen is the key to finally getting over the hump. That decision comes with immediate expectations and almost zero patience. Brady inherits a Super Bowl-ready team, but now he must prove he’s more than just a safe choice at the position.
