The Buffalo Bills finally held a press conference to discuss the firing of head coach Sean McDermott. Owner Terry Pegula and President of Football Operations/General Manager Brandon Beane fielded questions on the firing and what’s to come in 2026. Fans were desperately waiting in eager anticipation for the team to make some kind of announcement about McDermott’s departure.

To put it plainly, the entire thing was an absolute trainwreck with Pegula pointing most of the blame to anyone who wasn’t himself or Beane. One of the bigger topics of the conversation, and one that’s making waves across social media, was the discussion of drafting wide receiver Keon Coleman.

Terry Pegula throws Sean McDermott under the bus for Coleman’s selection

Coleman has had some off-the-field issues, being forced to sit out several times due to disciplinary reasons. When he is on the field, he’s left much to be desired after an offseason of promise. Coleman just either can’t get on the field, or when he does, he underperforms in a big way. Coleman’s collapse has been well documented, with Pegula throwing McDermott under the bus for the decision to draft him. Pegula actually interrupted a question that was posed to Beane.

“Can I interrupt? I’ll address the Keon situation,” Pegula said. “The coaching staff pushed to draft Keon. I’m not saying Brandon wouldn’t have drafted him, but he wasn’t his next choice. That was Brandon being a team player and taking advice of his coaching staff, who felt strongly about the player. He’s taken, for some reason, heat over it and not saying a word about it. But I’m here to tell you the true story.”

A big ol oof from the front office with this one. The outcry from the fans has been loud, with many of them believing that McDermott should have stayed and Beane should have left. The recent comments from Pegula just reinforce those feelings for a chunk of the fan base. McDermott is seemingly being blamed for everything at this point. The Coleman selection was a colossal failure at this point in his career, and it’s a shame that Pegula felt the need to call out McDermott.

Brandon Beane takes some responsibility for the decision

Later on in the press conference, Beane was once again asked about his draft philosophy and some of the misses he has had over the course of his career. Coleman was mentioned by name, with Beane shouldering some of the blame; how noble of him.

“At the end of the day, I still own the decision, right or wrong of Keon Coleman,” Beane said. “Keon has been here two years; he’s a young guy, I still believe in him.”

In the end, Beane’s words may have been meant to calm the storm, but they did little to undo the damage already done. The optics of the press conference were clear: McDermott is gone, yet he continues to absorb the blame for organizational failures that extend far beyond the Coleman draft pick.

Fair or not, the messaging from the top only deepened the divide among the fan base and raised even more questions about accountability inside One Bills Drive. If this was supposed to be a fresh start for the franchise, it didn’t feel like one. Instead, it felt like unfinished business dressed up as closure.
