The NFL has released a long-awaited announcement on how the league plans to navigate around the game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals.
The NFL announced that Monday night’s contest will be ruled a no contest on Thursday evening. This obviously means the Bills and Bengals will finish the regular season having played 16 games.
As for how this decision impacts the looming AFC playoff race, the NFL has devised a plan involving numerous scenarios.
As it pertains to Buffalo, the NFL has decided that if the Bills and Kansas City Chiefs each win or tie in their respective Week 18 matchups, it would set up for an AFC Championship Game played at a neutral site. That is, if the Bills and Chiefs are each able to survive through the AFC Divisional Round.
If Buffalo and Kansas City are to lose and the Baltimore Ravens win or tie, the AFC Championship Game would be at a neutral site.
To sum it up, if the Bills and Chiefs share a common result in Week 18, then the AFC Championship Game will be played a neutral location yet to be named.
It’s a relief to finally get clarity on the outstanding playoff implications that lie ahead. It helps that the Bills and Bengals are also able to get some sense of closure from the chilling events that took place earlier in the week.
