Bills tied to an all-too-familiar face as the trade deadline approaches
Things are heating up as the trade deadline approaches.
The Buffalo Bills have plenty to clean up on both sides of the football. On defense, the cornerback position has been lacking, with Christian Benford taking a step back, and the veteran Tre’Davious White getting beaten left and right. The sky isn’t on fire, but cornerback is one position of need for Buffalo as the trade deadline approaches.
However, discussing some new additions for quarterback Josh Allen is much more enjoyable, and CBS Sports has Buffalo as one of the potential landing spots for former New England Patriots and current Las Vegas Raiders receiver Jakobi Meyers.
Meyers, during his tenure with the Patriots, has faced Buffalo eight times in his career, registering 25 catches for 241 yards and a touchdown.
Why Buffalo makes sense for Meyers
CBS Sports’ Jared Dubin broke down why Buffalo makes sense for Meyers. The hypothetical trade is all about adding more weapons for Allen.
“The Bills feel like they are right now a year behind the cycle that the Kansas City Chiefs went through with their wide receivers. For the first couple of years after Tyreek Hill left, the Chiefs felt like they were fine cobbling things together. But then last year, they felt like they had to make a trade for DeAndre Hopkins when things weren’t going all that well.
“The Bills without Diggs were just fine last year. And really, they have been mostly fine this year. But you can always get more dangerous. And Meyers would certainly add some juice to a wide receiver corps that currently consists of Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Josh Palmer, Elijah Moore, Curtis Samuel, and Tyrell Shavers.
“Meyers has been known as a slot guy for much of his career, but these last two years, he’s actually spent some more time playing on the perimeter. He and Shakir would be able to coexist in the offense, complementing each other’s skill sets.” – Jared Dubin
A complementary piece for the Bills’ offense could be exactly what the doctor ordered as the trade deadline rapidly approaches. Buffalo is also tied to New Orleans Saints receiver Chris Olave and even fellow receiver Rashid Shaheed. Meyers is just another potential target for the Bills.
Meyers is in the final season of his three-year, $33 million contract, which he signed in 2023, making him a potential trade candidate for the Bills. Throughout his entire career, Meyers has started in 76 games with 422 receptions for 4,921 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Buffalo adding Meyers wouldn’t overhaul the offense, but rather sharpen it. A dependable target like Meyers could be the missing piece in critical third-down and red-zone situations, helping Allen rediscover the rhythm that made this unit one of the NFL’s best last season.
