Buffalo Bills provide unexpected and worrying injury update on Josh Allen and its impact on 2026
The latest update on quarterback Josh Allen provides some clarity on 2026.
The Buffalo Bills provided an update on quarterback Josh Allen during a press conference to discuss the firing of head coach Sean McDermott. Owner Terry Pegula and President of Football Operations/General Manager Brandon Beane spoke to the media for the first time since the decision to fire the nine-year head coach was announced.
It was flat-out ugly, with Pegula and Beane pointing the blame at anyone but themselves. McDermott was thrown under the bus on more than one occasion. However, it’s toward the end of the press conference that has Bills Mafia a little worried.
Injury update on Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen
It was clear that Allen was in pain, an injury suffered during the win against the Cleveland Browns that carried on into the postseason. At one point, Allen had three separate injury designations heading into the Denver Broncos divisional round loss. He’s a true warrior.
Beane shared that Allen might need to get some work done, but that it shouldn’t impact their 2026 plans. Allen, even if he does need surgery, should be back in time for OTAs. Beane was asked about where Allen’s health is at the current moment, and his response wasn’t fantastic.
“He could have to have something done to his foot potentially here soon,” Beane said. “But it would not impact like OTA stuff if he does.”
Allen is an ironman in the league and holds the longest active NFL streak of consecutive starts by a quarterback. He plays through nearly every injury, including the foot injury that he might need to have some sort of procedure done on it. Just another example of how tough this dude really is.
Josh Allen’s injury history proves he’s one of one
It’s not the first and won’t be the last time that Allen has played through injury, despite continuing his unprecedented consecutive starting streak. In 2018, Allen missed four games with a right elbow injury, and that was the last time that he’s missed a game in his NFL career.
In 2022, Allen suffered a partial tear late in Week 9 but played through the remainder of the season. In 2025, he suffered a non-specific injury to his throwing hand and then, toward the end of the season suffered a right elbow contusion but didn’t miss a snap. Now, in 2025, he suffered a foot injury and reaggravated it later in the season, still starting and playing in every game and the postseason.
In his college career, he missed 16 games while dealing with a broken collarbone on multiple occasions and a sprained AC joint, though he was able to return for the bowl game. He’s a warrior on the football field, and will do everything he can to make sure he’s able to play when the kickoff begins.
A potential procedure this offseason may raise eyebrows in the moment, but history suggests it’s nothing that Bills Mafia should panic about. If Allen says he’ll be ready, he will be.
He’s built his career on toughness and availability with an unmatched willingness to push through pain for his teammates and himself. Whether it’s surgery or just a simple rest and rehab, Allen has more than earned the benefit of the doubt, and there’s little reason to believe this will be any different as Buffalo turns the page to 2026.
