The past 24 hours haven’t been kind to the Buffalo Bills or the Bills Mafia.

While the team prepares for the upcoming Week 14 contest against the Bengals, veteran cornerback Darius Slay has come and gone. Though Slay’s time in Buffalo lasted longer than Antonio Brown’s but less than Anquan Boldin’s, it was short-lived to say the least.

Slay was released by the Steelers and picked up off waivers by the Bills, and would have added valuable depth at the position as the team gears up for a playoff push.

Ultimately, Slay is deciding whether or not he wants to retire, informing Buffalo that he will not be joining them. Now, Buffalo retains his rights, so if he decides not to retire, he’ll remain a member of the Bills unless they decide on a different path.

With Slay’s addition, the team needed to make a roster move. Cornerback Ja’Marcus Ingram was waived as a result and has since been picked up by the Houston Texans.

After Slay decided against coming to Buffalo, the Bills most likely were hoping that Ingram would clear waivers and could return. Ingram getting picked up by Houston was an unintended consequence after they attempted to get better by landing Slay.

Buffalo has a lack of cornerback depth

Remaining on the roster for cornerbacks are Tre’Davious White, Maxwell Hairston, Christian Benford, and Dane Jackson. While on the depth chart, the team lists Taron Johnson and Brandon Codrington. Johnson is a nickel corner, and Brandon Codrington is more of a return man than a cornerback.

The team is dangerously thin at the position and could force a move to try and bring in another cornerback to help. Remembering last season in the playoffs when the Bills had to trot out Kaiir Elam due to injury, there’s a bit of nervousness surrounding the lack of depth.

The unit went from very solid to alarming in just a matter of hours. Alarming in the lack of depth, not due to performance as White, Benford, and Hairston have all played well, as the team boasts the No. 1 pass defense in terms of yards allowed per game.

Between Joey Bosa and A.J. Epenesa’s injury concerns and Slay backing out before even taking a single snap, or even getting to look at the field, the Bills have watched a few position groups take some hits. It’s not season-ending chaos in Buffalo, but it’s definitely going to test the resolve a bit.
