The Buffalo Bills got beaten badly in front of a large national audience on Thursday. While the box score may seem close, the game felt completely out of hand for Buffalo. Still, despite some self-inflicted wounds and some less-than-ideal play-calling from offensive coordinator Joe Brady, the team still had a chance to win the game in the closing moments.

While the defense struggled in the first half, allowing two touchdowns to Texans quarterback Davis Mills, it settled in during the second half, giving the offense a chance to claw back into the contest. A fourth down deep in Houston’s territory that wound up resulting in offensive pass interference ended the contest after Buffalo was marching down the field.

With losses like this, the veteran presence in the locker room is of the utmost importance. Safety Jordan Poyer spoke to the media just seconds after the loss and had an unforgettable message that all of Bills Mafia can get behind. He was asked what kind of message he would have for the team, and whether they are riding the waves of the season or focusing on the task at hand.

“Absolutely, still a lot of football left,” Poyer said. “A lot to grow from this game, the season is not over as much as this loss stings. Got a little mini bye, recollect ourselves, get healthy, and get ready for Pittsburgh next week.”

Poyer had a great game, even better perspective after the loss

The veteran safety had a crucial tackle that saved the Bills four points. Poyer was all over the field and was a bright spot in an otherwise abysmal performance all around. He’s seen it all in this league, and his perspective is more than a little valuable.

Of course, one of the biggest talking points of the game was the sheer number of injuries that the Bills sustained. Several key playmakers from both sides of the football went down, including quarterback Josh Allen.

Buffalo, once again, was forced to deploy the next-man-up approach after the barrage of injuries, something that Poyer was asked about after the loss.

“I mean, Thursday night games, short week. It’s just part of the game, it’s next man up,” Poyer said. “I thought guys that came in, Shaq, when Max went down, Tre’Davious at CB. Guys continue to step up when their names are called. Obviously, defensively, we got to make one more play. We have to find a way to get the ball, get a turnover to help our offense. We knew that was a good defense; they were the number one defense in the league, so we knew we needed to find a way to steal a possession, and we just weren’t able to do that today.”

Between the injuries and the missed opportunities, the loss will leave a painful sting. Poyer’s perspective offered the reset the Bills needed: the season isn’t slipping away unless they let it. Buffalo now enters a mini-bye week of sorts with a chance to get healthier and refocus before traveling to Pittsburgh for a crucial Week 13 showdown.
