What Brandon Beane said about James Cook on HBO’s Hard Knocks should be a wake up call for the Buffalo Bills star
HBO’s Hard Knocks caught every moment.
While the first episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks didn’t include anything surrounding the James Cook saga, we had a feeling that the subsequent episodes surely would. For a documentary focused on the storylines of the team and its players, it wasn’t shocking to see the Cook contract situation unfold on the hit docu-series.
Brandon Beane was featured more heavily in the episode, and when the topic of James Cook came up, the GM kept it professional while also discussing how this is all a business. It also appears that Beane is in no rush to push a deal through. “It doesn’t have to happen now. I’m hopeful a year from now that James Cook is still wearing the Buffalo Bills red, white, and blue.”
This comment should be a wakeup call for Cook; he doesn’t have the leverage he was hoping for.
James Cook’s decision is not working out
The NFL’s 2024 leader in rushing touchdowns has been a hold-in while awaiting a new contract. While previously not practicing with the team, Cook eventually showed up after nine days of standing on “business.” The bizarre new “hold-in” trend across the NFL was brought up and explained by Beane during the episode.
“The old school way of holding out is that the player wasn’t around, they’re working out at some other facility, they’re not in meetings. The hold-in that’s kinda going on these days. The player is in meetings and participating in most everything except actual practice.”
Beane, the front office, and even Josh Allen have had to field questions about the disgruntled star’s attempt to get a new deal done before the season begins, if that’s even what Cook is aiming for. But, as Evan Winters from A to Z Sports previously reported, the system is stacked against Cook.
Whether he likes it or not, the best course of action for Cook is to suit up and play the best football he possibly can. While still on a rookie deal, he hasn’t qualified to become a vested veteran. In short, the Bills hold all the power even if Cook were to sit out the entire season and void his contract. He’ll be back trying to stand on “business” once again. Yet another reason why his comments should be a wake-up call for the star running back.
All love from Beane
That’s not to say that there isn’t love between the two sides. Beane was more than pleasant during his conversation about wanting nothing more than to have Cook back on the field, “The perfect world is James back on the practice field. And at some point, we’re able to keep him here in Buffalo. I love James so much. It’s a guy you’ve drafted and developed.”
Watching just a few minutes of the docu-series, you can tell that this team feels more like a family. It’s easy to fall in love with this cast of characters, and it extends between the front office and the players. Beane highlighted how the Cook situation hits home, as he views the players as family.
“A lot of times, these guys feel like your sons or your younger brothers, however you look at it. I also have to manage the whole team and the cap, and the cash, and those things, so the whole puzzle has to work together.”
While James Cook appears to have ended his hold-in, this entire situation has been more than a little bizarre. Sean McDermott, before practice, had said that “things have changed” with Cook and the team, and what followed was Cook’s first practice back. Here’s hoping that things continue to change and we can put all this contract drama nonsense behind us.
