The Buffalo Bills brought in some reinforcements to their running back room with the addition of former Super Bowl champion and playoff legend Leonard Fournette. This comes on the heels of the team losing Damien Harris for what could be the season.
We'll break down his place on the depth chart in a moment but the Bills Mafia can expect Fournette to provide some much-needed depth and unprecedented playoff experience.
With his addition, what kind of an impact will Fournette be making on this roster? The team had announced that he was signed to the practice squad, but that doesn't mean he will stay there forever. Just take a look at Josh Norman, he was already made active in the team's last game against the Tampa Bay Buccanneers.
Does Fournette still have enough in the tank to contribute at a high level on an explosive offense that features one of the best quarterbacks and wide receivers in the NFL, behind an ascending offensive line?
Leonard Fournette's career stats
Fournette has been a dominant force in the NFL since his arrival and he's going to look to continue that in Buffalo, in whatever role the team might lay out for him. While this backfield still belongs to James Cook, there is a place for Fournette on offense.
The veteran running back played college football at LSU and was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the fourth overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He's played for both the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before heading over to Buffalo.
Through six seasons, Fournette has played in 79 games, 61 started. Fournette has 1132 rushing attempts for 4478 yards and 34 touchdowns on the ground. What's more, he's added 312 receptions for 2219 yards and seven touchdowns through the air as well.
Will Fournette start for the Bills?
Barring anything catastrophic, no. Fournette was added to the practice squad and while we can see him getting called up and being active on some gamedays, this backfield doesn't belong to him.
Currently, the team has unlocked something special in James Cook. The second-year back is making a difference in the running, and passing game, providing a different dimension for the offense this season. Cook, through 8 games, has amassed 102 carries for 486 yards and one lone touchdown on the ground. In the passing game, he's totaled 18 receptions for 192 yards and a touchdown to boot.
So, is Fournette going to be the team's second option at running back? Not so fast, the team brought in veteran Latavius Murray, who has been a nice little surprise to the running game when Cook needs a breather. Murray has 143 yards on 40 carries with two touchdowns and another 10 catches for 73 years through the air.
The current structure of the Buffalo Bills running back room, with Harris out indefinitely and Fournette being brought in, will look something like the following.
- James Cook
- Latavius Murray
- Leonard Fournette
- Ty Johnson
'Playoff Lenny' impact in January
While it's barely November and the team hasn't been playing their best football, Brandon Beane and the front office make these moves with the future in mind. Now, while Fournette isn't the lead back, he brings valuable experience that is much bigger than the x's and o's.
Fournette has been otherworldly in the postseason, earning him the nickname 'Playoff Lenny.' Buccaneers former head coach Bruce Arians and former offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich changed up their plans during the 2020 postseason and decided to give Fournette some increased touches.
What transpired is the stuff of legends and a big reason why Buffalo was looking to bring him in. In just four playoff games that year, Fournette went off for 64 carries for 300 yards while adding 18 catches for 148 receiving yards and four total touchdowns. With that, a legend was born.
Fournette had a little changeup in his name after winning a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers, going from 'Playoff Lenny' to 'Super Bowl Lenny' after winning Super Bowl LV with the Buccanneers.
Buffalo is hoping to get some more of that playoff magic from Fournette when called upon. While this is still James Cook's backfield, there is room for big-time playmakers like Fournette to flourish on this offense. Can Buffalo resurrect the legend that is 'Playoff Lenny?' Only time will tell.
Bills have unique advantage in potential bid for major trade
The Buffalo Bills could wind up being buyers at the NFL trade deadline. With that, the team could be moving away from young CB Kaiir Elam.
