Brian Burns got angry Sunday afternoon.

On a fourth-and-1, with around 10 minutes left in a 42-24 loss to the Detroit Lions, the Panthers' defensive star Burns threw his helmet down in frustration after defensive tackle Nick Thurman jumped offside. After the outburst and the Panthers' fifth loss of the season, Burns explained his anger and apologized to a scrump of reporters near his locker.

“Yeah, I was frustrated,’’ Burns said afterward. “My passion came out. After I did that I went to my defense to apologize and let them know I’m still here.

“But it’s a passionate game. It’s not right for me to lash out because we make mistakes all the time. I didn’t have a perfect game. Nobody had a perfect game by any means. So yeah, I’ve got to keep my composure.’’

The Panthers were well on their way to another gut-punch loss, but the offside call was emblematic of the moments that have torpedoed Carolina's season five weeks in. The team lacks discipline and struggles to come up with plays in must-have-them moments.

Burns' anger was understood. Most veterans on the roster probably felt the same way. A portion of that anger has to be attributed to the reality that help walking through the door is a fool's hope.

The Panthers reportedly aren't willing to part with any draft capital to land a playmaking receiver — which is exactly what the offense needs for an injection of life.

Additionally, the learning curve for Bryce Young has been far steeper than many expected.

In Sunday's loss, Young threw three touchdown passes. He also threw two interceptions, both of which led directly to Lions points. Burns' anger may have been misplaced, but it is also understood.

Besides, he may not be wearing a Panthers uniform for much longer as the trade deadline looms.

“We’re all grown men,’’ Burns said. “We’ve got to get back to work."
